I have vague memories of seeing Mary Timony open for Ted Leo in late 2004 at the Black Cat. Timony played as a duo with Devin Ocampo of Medications on drums. The two have fantastic musical chemistry, something I culled from that show as well as 2005’s Ex Hex. On The Shapes We Make, Timony’s Kill Rock Stars debut and 4th solo album, the D.C. native and former Helium singer takes that chemistry to the next level. If you learn anything from The Shapes We Make it should be that Timony is a phenomenal guitarist. One listen to the twisty “Pause/Off” confirms this. The Shapes We Make balances noise-pop (”Sharpshooter”) with a sound more ambitious, as hinted on the outstanding “Each Day.” Errors are few, with the dull “Pink Clouds” standing as the only track I’d skip. This is one of the best records I’ve heard out of a local product in quite some time.
