I knew Mark Martucci was on to something when I interviewed him in 2004. At that time, the multi-instrumentalist had yet to even release a traditional album. I heard a number of songs he had self-recorded and was instantly hooked. Two years later and a move from New Jersey to California, Mark has finally released a formal debut, A Progression Of Stilts. Martucci is personally selling the album on CD & vinyl through his web site.
What I find most impressive about A Progression Of Stilts is how well it flows. There are 18 songs, many of which are very short, yet highly efficient. This is one of those records where every listener will have their own favorite song. In terms of influence, Martucci’s music recalls Elliott Smith’s lighter moments (see “Gone”) and Jim O’Rourke’s pop songs (see “Staring Daggers”). He throws in some Brian Wilson/Beach Boys harmonies for good measure too.
Martucci’s soft voice is the perfect company for the sounds I just described. He has the ability to hit on numerous moods, something that makes A Progression Of Stilts so entertaining. A lot of Martucci’s songs sound like something you’d expect to hear on an episode of The Adventures Of Pete And Pete. They are heartfelt and have a sense of humor. Take one listen to “1994″ and try not to get it stuck in your head. This is one debut that delivers on the promise of the artist’s early recordings.
