Words On Music, an underrated Minnesota label, usually specializes in slowcore and dream pop, but they are tackling a different animal with their release of the debut from San Francisco’s Magic Bullets. The awkwardly titled A Child But In Life Yet A Doctor In Love is one of the label’s most rewarding releases to date. This six-piece, fronted by Phil Benson, sound like the west coast’s answer to The Walkmen. The coupling of “Will Scarlet,” which is highlighted by a fantastic instrumental burst, and the subtle “Short Circuit” represent the album’s peak. The second half of A Child But In Life doesn’t distinguish itself as much as I would like, but this is still a band I’m interested in following. In other words, if I lived in San Francisco, I’d see this band as much as possible.
