I have lived in Virginia my entire life, so I am allowed to pick on the state’s capital. For the time being, I am going to lay off of Richmond because the city has managed to score an unbelievable concert. The National, which I can attest to being a fantastic venue, will host My Bloody Valentine and an unannounced guest on July 30th. If only that special guest was a reunited Slowdive, but I suppose this will suffice. As far as I know, aside from an August 1st appearance at All Points West in New Jersey, this is the only currently announced show that the shoegaze legends will be performing on the east coast. Tickets go on sale this Saturday, June 20th.

Words cannot convey how excited I am for this. Saw them back in 91 with Dinosaur, then last September at Roseland, NYC – special guest ended up being J. Mascis who was playing a gig in the NYC area at the same time. I found out about this week’s show by accident. I am super interested in the supporting band/artist. Any inside info? Anyone? Anyone?
Thanks for posting Abby. I still have no idea who is opening the show. A poster on last.fm claimed the venue didn’t even know. Can’t wait though!
No luck with the supporting band research. Word of warning to those who haven’t seen them recently: Back in 91 they were loud, of course I was sans earplugs (the only band I’ve seen who even came close was Loop). Last September I used the earplugs given out at the door by Roseland people. I’ve been no pansy with noise over the years – but they were most definitely needed with the acoustics of the room and the technological advances of sound systems since 91. I expect the same for Richmond. Going out tonight to buy some new SOTA earwear for Thursday. I am as hardcore as an MBVer gets and I am not ashamed to say “Earplugs? Yes, thank you.” I want to hear everything while filtering out the bad. Again, can’t wait. Yay!
I am so there!!!!

The National claims they will not know the opener until after the band arrives at the venue. Very interesting.
any news on the opener? thanks
Kurt Heasley of Lilys ended up opening.
MBV were incredible. One of the best shows I’ve ever seen.
I think my face melted every time the chorus came in “Only Shallow.”
The DCist blog has the setlist:

I liked that review.
Damn fine show.. well worth the 17 year wait since I was first introduced to them. Thanks so much for coming to our tiny city!
