Ryan Adams has announced that his first full length since June 2007’s Easy Tiger will be released on October 28th. The album, Ryan’s 10th overall, is titled Cardinology. Much like Easy Tiger, Cardinology is being described as cohesive and focused. After being excited by that premise prior to hearing Easy Tiger, I was disappointed when I finally did hear it. I’m hoping that Cardinology sounds a bit less like Adams on autopilot. A portion of the album’s first single, “Fix It,” can be sampled at Adams’ MySpace. “Fix It” will be released digitially on October 7th. Viewers of the A&E television show The Cleaner will be able to hear “Stop,” Cardinology’s closing track, in an episode set to air tomorrow night.
Adams also has some extensive tours coming together. He was on the road with Oasis in late August and early September. Adams wasn’t on the bill at the Virgin Festival in Toronto on September 7th that was highlighted by Oasis’ Noel Gallagher being assaulted on stage, but he did express condolences for his “fallen brother.” Oasis has had to cancel several recent dates as a result of Noel’s injuries, but that hasn’t stopped them from scheduling a December tour with Adams to help promote the upcoming (October 7th) Don’t Believe The Truth. Adams and his band of Cardinals will be doing some touring of their own before then as well. D.C. area fans can catch Adams with Oasis at George Mason University’s Patriot Center on December 20th. Maybe Ryan will dress up as Santa.
Oh yeah, Adams has a book coming out in March, but I’ll let you read up on that one for yourself.

The cover of House With No Home, the 2nd full length from Justin Ringle’s Horse Feathers, couldn’t be more appropriate. Its rural imagery compliments the midwestern folk tinges of Ringle’s songs, which are filled out by the beautiful string interplay of siblings Heather and Peter Broderick. For the record, Ringle was born and raised in Idaho and currently lives in Portland, but you get the stylistic description I’m aiming for. House With No Home is Ringle’s first effort for Kill Rock Stars and is one of the more thoughtful releases to hit the label in quite some time. I’m sure I sound cheesy when writing this, but as fall begins, this album and its angelic arrangements feel like the perfect introduction to the new season.
What makes the album click is the diverse arrangements that I just spoke of. Much of that can be credited to Peter Broderick, who has collaborated with a handful of artists that range from Norfolk & Western to Library Tapes and M. Ward. Broderick played a large role in arranging these tracks and, along with his sister Heather, serve as an extraordinary foil to Ringle. It is hard to imagine Ringle’s voice, which has been compared to Iron & Wine’s Sam Beam, being better suited for any other genre. Lead track “Curs In The Weeds” is the notable standout, but the album is littered with strong moments. The duo of “Father Reprise” and “Heathen’s Kiss” is equally outstanding. This atmospheric sophomore effort is a clear breakthrough and is well on its way to becoming a sleeper hit.

Earlier this year, Calgary’s Flemish Eye Records released the self titled debut from Women, a little known Canadian quartet. Women are fortunate enough to count Flemish Eye labelmate Chad VanGaalen as one of their biggest fans. VanGaalen produced the album shares concert bills with the group on a regular basis. It appears that Flemish Eye’s release of the album generated some notice here in the states. That attention culminated in July when it was announced that Jagjaguwar had signed the band and would be handling the U.S. release, which will take place on October 7th. Women will spend the fall season touring, not only with VanGaalen but also with Dungen and Julie Doiron. Dates are listed below:

Casiotone For The Painfully Alone’s Owen Ashworth has yet to deliver a follow-up to his encouraging 2006 effort Etiquette, but he has been keeping it real with some small vinyl releases. This includes the Town Topic 7″ (released in England by OIB Records) and the STNSC Instrumentals 7″ (released by the Olympia label People In A Position To Know). These two releases contained instrumental (aside from the vocals on Town Topic’s “Ice Cream Truck”) re-recordings of previously released Casiotone tracks. Ashworth allowed director Laurel Nakadate to use these new versions in her debut film, Stay The Same Never Change (available on DVD later this year). All fourteen tracks from are now being compiled on a CD, which will also be titled Town Topic. As a bonus, the CD will close with “Green Cotton Sweater (Version),” a new take on a cut from 2001’s Pocket Symphonies For Lonely Subway Cars. Town Topic will be released by Tomlab on September 23rd. Ashworth is currently on tour in Europe.
